You'll never catch me alive, cop'r!

I post all of my running and cycling workouts on dailymile, so if you follow me there you may have seen me remark about the dangers of being unaware of your surroundings while running/cycling an MP3 Player and earbuds in. I also often post descriptions of fun or interesting things I hear and see, or interactions with people or wildlife I experience along the trail. I would completely miss out on many of these things if I were to run with earbuds.  Even with low volume, they just tend to limit awareness of your surroundings, and being of Buddhist persuasion, I tend to like to be as aware as I can in each moment, even while working out.

So, here's a funny story. Yesterday, I did some cross training, and had a unexpected fun interaction with a little boy on a bicycle who apparently wants to be a police officer when he grows up.

In about the last half mile of a 12 mile bike ride, I passed a little boy on a small bicycle. Cute kid (about 5-7 years old), with curly blonde hair, but his expression was disapproving, and he shook his head in a scolding manner as he flipped a switch on his handlebars. A siren came on (no kidding)! I screamed past him doing about 25, on my way to 30, and he yelled, "Hey, pull over!"
I slowed and looked back to see if he was really talking to me, and I was a little shocked to see that he apparently was. Not only that, he was riding hard after me in a determined but wobbly pursuit.

So, I did what any self-respecting cyclist would do, and I yelled back at him, "You'll never catch me alive, cop'r!" Then, I hit the pedals hard, so I could get home and shut the garage behind me before he knew which house I went to.
I guess the economy is pretty bad if tax revenues are so low that kids are now issuing traffic tickets, though I still can't figure out what I had done wrong.

I'm now afraid he knows where I live, and will be waiting outside with a water taser when I go out to take care of the garden.
